Anna, Seven Years on the Frontline
A film by Masha Novikova
Januari 2008
78 minutes

This film is about Anna Politkovskaya, who had spent seven years on frontline and put herself in danger so often. Who felt very lonely, but could never stop doing what she did. We follow her, together with her thoughts and dreams. We see the same images she saw and we meet the same people she met, people who she always kept thinking about. In those last seven years of frontlines, she was always going somewhere, to Chechnya, Beslan or wherever.

In order to understand Anna's work and duties, together with her character, her fears and feelings of loneliness, we meet three other women, each of them stood by her during hard times and moments of weakness.

We meet and talk with Galina Musaliyeva who is a colleague of Anna and who had shared a room with her in the editorial office of Novaya Gazeta for the last seven years. She shows us the place where Anna had worked and tells us about two other journalists from the same office who were murdered before Anna. Apparently, in Russia it's not unusual that journalists get killed because of their work. Galina, who is a soft and loving person, saw Anna as a very strong, intelligent and responsible person, as well as a highly professional colleague.

Lidia Yusupova, a lawyer from Grozny, has spent many years searching for the lost people in Chechnya. In 2003 she received a Martin Ennals price in Geneva for her bravery. She used to work a lot with Anna and her own life is at constant risk as well. The death of Anna has had a huge impact on her. Lida is now very tired and stressed. Despite all her work, she feels that she didn't help enough people.

Svetlana Gannushkina has also worked with Anna. She helps a lot of fugitives and emigrants from the formal Soviet Union republics. They are called "blacks" by racists in Russia and the new fascists have already threaten Svetlana with death and put her on their black list. But even that doesn't stop her from being optimistic.

We also talk to Vyacheslav Izmailov, another colleague of Anna from Novaya Gazeta. He has started his own investigations, trying to find out who killed Anna. He is filmed in the hospital where he is now, after he has had an insult.
